What is a Dental Abscess?
A dental abscess is a severe infection characterized by a pocket of pus that can form in different parts of a tooth or gum. This painful condition requires immediate emergency dental treatment to prevent the infection from spreading and causing serious complications.

Warning Signs of a Dental Abscess
Recognising the symptoms of a dental abscess is crucial as this condition requires emergency dental care. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate treatment to prevent serious complications.
Severe, Throbbing Pain
Intense, persistent pain that may radiate to your ear, jaw, and neck area. The pain might worsen when lying down.
Facial Swelling
Swelling in your face, cheek, or jaw area that may be warm to touch. This can indicate infection spread requiring urgent attention.
Fever and General Illness
High temperature, feeling generally unwell, and difficulty opening your mouth can indicate a spreading infection.
Tender, Swollen Gums
Red, swollen gums that are painful to touch and may have a visible bump or pimple-like structure.
Bad Taste and Smell
Foul taste in your mouth and bad breath due to draining pus from the abscess.
Sensitivity to Pressure
Extreme sensitivity when biting or chewing, often accompanied by looseness of the affected tooth.
Understanding Dental Trauma
Dental trauma encompasses any injury to the teeth, gums, or surrounding oral tissues. Whether from accidents, sports injuries, or falls, immediate professional attention is crucial for the best possible outcome.
Types of Dental Trauma We Treat
- •Knocked-Out Teeth (Avulsion)
Immediate action is crucial. Keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva and seek emergency dental care within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving it.
- •Cracked or Broken Teeth
From minor chips to severe fractures, prompt treatment prevents infection and further damage.
- •Displaced Teeth
Teeth pushed into or out of their sockets require immediate professional attention to prevent long-term complications.

Dental abscess questions
How do I know if I have a dental abscess?
Common signs are throbbing toothache, a swollen gum or cheek, a pimple-like gum boil, a bad taste in the mouth, pain when biting, and sometimes a fever. A swollen face or ongoing pain should be seen urgently.
Can a dental abscess go away on its own?
No. Pain can ease if an abscess bursts, but the infection is still there and can come back or spread. It needs to be assessed and treated by a dentist.
Can you see me the same day for a tooth infection?
Yes. We are open 24 hours and see emergency patients without registration. The dentist will find the source of the infection, relieve your pain and explain the treatment options, which may include drainage, root canal treatment or removing the tooth.
When is a dental abscess an A&E emergency?
Go to A&E or call 999 if swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, is closing an eye, or you feel very unwell with a high temperature. Otherwise call us straight away.
How much does an emergency abscess appointment cost?
Our emergency consultation is a flat £20 and includes a full examination and any X-rays needed to find the cause. If treatment is needed, the dentist explains the options and the cost before anything starts.
Dental emergency or A&E?
Most dental emergencies need a dentist, not a hospital. Call us on 07857 998997 if you have any of the problems on the left. Go to A&E or call 999 for the problems on the right.
