Urgent Symptoms to Watch For If You Have a Toothache

Recognising the signs of a dental emergency is crucial for preventing further complications. If you experience any of the following symptoms, it's important to seek immediate dental care to prevent the condition from worsening and to relieve your pain quickly.

Severe Throbbing Pain

Intense, pulsating pain that prevents sleep or daily activities could indicate a serious infection or deep cavity requiring immediate attention.

Facial Swelling

Swelling in your face or around the affected tooth may indicate an abscess or serious infection that needs urgent treatment to prevent spreading.

Temperature Sensitivity

Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures might indicate exposed nerve endings or deep decay requiring immediate dental intervention.

Pain When Chewing

Sharp pain during biting or chewing could signal a cracked tooth, loose filling, or deep cavity that needs immediate assessment.

Persistent Bad Taste

A constant unpleasant taste or smell in your mouth might indicate an infection or abscess that requires emergency treatment.

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding or receding gums around a painful tooth could indicate advanced gum disease or an infection requiring immediate professional care.

Common Causes of Toothache

Understanding what's causing your toothache is essential for proper treatment. While only a dental professional can provide an accurate diagnosis, here are the most common causes of tooth pain:

Tooth Decay and Cavities

The most frequent cause of toothache is dental decay. When bacteria break down the tooth's protective enamel, it can lead to:

  • •Sensitivity to hot and cold foods or drinks
  • •Sharp pain when biting down
  • •Continuous dull aching in and around the tooth

Gum Disease

Periodontal disease can cause significant tooth pain and if left untreated, may lead to tooth loss. Common indicators include:

  • •Tender, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • •Pain when brushing or flossing
  • •Receding gum line exposing sensitive root surfaces

Damaged or Worn Fillings

Over time, dental fillings can become damaged or fall out, leading to various symptoms:

  • •Sudden sensitivity to pressure when biting
  • •Sharp pain when consuming hot or cold foods
  • •Food getting stuck in or around the tooth

Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a severe infection that requires immediate emergency treatment. Signs include:

  • •Severe, throbbing pain that may spread to ear or jaw
  • •Swelling in the face or cheek
  • •Extreme sensitivity to pressure and temperature
  • •Foul taste and bad breath

Emergency toothache questions

What can I do for severe toothache at night before I see a dentist?

If you can safely take them, paracetamol or ibuprofen (following the packet instructions) can take the edge off the pain. Keep your head raised, avoid very hot, cold or sugary food and drink, and hold a cold compress against the outside of your cheek. These steps only ease the symptoms. The cause still needs a dentist, and we are open 24 hours.

Why is toothache worse at night?

Lying down sends more blood to your head, which can increase pressure on an inflamed nerve, and there are fewer distractions to take your mind off the pain. Pain that wakes you up is a good reason to call an emergency dentist rather than wait.

Do I need to be registered to see your emergency dentist?

No. You do not need to be registered with us or have a referral. We are a private clinic, so you can book an emergency appointment straight away instead of waiting for an NHS slot.

How much is an emergency toothache appointment?

Our emergency consultation is a flat £20 and includes a full examination and any X-rays needed to find the cause. If treatment is needed, the dentist explains the options and the cost before anything starts.

When should toothache go to A&E instead?

Go to A&E or call 999 if your face or mouth is swelling so much that it affects your breathing or swallowing, or swelling is closing an eye. For all other severe toothache, call us on 07857 998997 and we will see you.

Dental emergency or A&E?

Most dental emergencies need a dentist, not a hospital. Call us on 07857 998997 if you have any of the problems on the left. Go to A&E or call 999 for the problems on the right.

See an emergency dentist for

  • Severe toothache, including pain at night
  • A knocked-out, broken, cracked or chipped tooth
  • A lost or loose filling, crown, bridge or veneer
  • A swollen gum, abscess or bad taste with pain
  • Pain or bleeding after a tooth extraction
  • Wisdom tooth pain that will not settle

Go to A&E or call 999 for

  • Swelling that makes breathing or swallowing difficult
  • Swelling that is closing one or both eyes
  • Heavy bleeding from the mouth that will not stop
  • Serious injury to the face or jaw
  • A head injury with vomiting, drowsiness or double vision

Open 24 hours, 365 days

Nights, Sundays and bank holidays included, with no need to be registered first.
